Combined video–hydroacoustic survey of nearshore semi-pelagic rockfish in untrawlable habitats

چکیده

Abstract New survey technologies are needed to untrawlable habitats in a cost-effective and nonlethal manner with minimal impacts on habitat nontarget species. Here, we test the efficacy of integrating data from suspended underwater camera acoustic generate population estimates for nearshore Black (Sebastes melanops), Blue mystinus), Deacon Rockfish diaconus). We surveyed Seal Rock Reef near Newport, Oregon, compared our results derived mark–recapture study conducted at same reef. fish density video deployments those calculated applying published target strength length regression models acoustics data. Densities acoustics, using generalized physoclist model, were significantly different densities video; conversely, rockfish-specific model generated that not statistically densities. To assess whether, how, behaviour was influenced by presence an camera, deployed under transducer. No statistical difference observed before, during, or after deployment. Our work suggests combining stereo provided similar estimate historic results, but accurate dependent proper target–strength model. contend hydroacoustic is effective surveying rockfish habitats.

Fish Assemblages in Nearshore Habitats of Prince William Sound, Alaska

We sampled fish at eight locations in western Prince William Sound (PWS), Alaska, in April, July, and September 2006, and July 2007, to identify species assemblages and habitat use. At each location, fish were sampled with a 37-m long variable mesh beach seine in three nearshore habitats: bedrock outcrops, eelgrass meadows, and cobble beaches with kelp. A total of 49,060 fish representing 45 sp...

Fate of heterotrophic microbes in pelagic habitats: focus on populations.

Major biogeochemical processes in the water columns of lakes and oceans are related to the activities of heterotrophic microbes, e.g., the mineralization of organic carbon from photosynthesis and allochthonous influx or its transport to the higher trophic levels. During the last 15 years, cultivation-independent molecular techniques have substantially contributed to our understanding of the div...

Essential fish habitats (EFH) of small pelagic fishes in the north of the Persian Gulf and Oman Sea, Iran

Small pelagic fishes particularly anchovy (Encrasicholina punctifer) and sardine (Sardinella sindensis) have an important role to support the Iranian fisheries, and are distributed along the entire length of the Persian Gulf and Oman Sea coastal waters. Using small pelagic fisheries logbook, a GIS-based environmental modelling approach was applied to investigate the presence and abundance of an...
